Our department leaders keep pitching shiny new AI initiatives that sound exciting but feel like corporate theater. How do we reframe AI proposals around operations improvement rather than technology hype?
Ban the phrase AI project from your company vocabulary. When teams pitch artificial intelligence, machine learning, or neural networks, they almost always focus on the novelty of the software rather than an operational outcome. That is how leadership teams waste capital on tools that look impressive in a demo but fail to change a single measurable on their EOS Scorecard.
Enforce a strict leadership policy: never sell AI internally. Instead, pitch operational improvements that machine learning happens to enable, mentioning the technology only as an implementation footnote.
When a department head proposes a workflow change, require them to submit their pitch through three operational lenses:
- The Bottleneck: What specific step in our documented Core Processes is currently limiting throughput, delaying deliverables, or causing errors?
- The Measurable: Which weekly Scorecard measurable or customer satisfaction metric will this improvement shift within ninety days?
- The Mechanism: How does this change reduce cumbersome manual work so our people can operate in their Unique Ability or increase capacity?
If a proposal cannot identify the operational friction point and the corresponding financial or metric payoff, drop it immediately. It is technology theater. When you evaluate initiatives strictly as operations improvement Rocks, the tool itself becomes irrelevant. Whether the solution relies on an advanced language model, a zapier automation, or a rewritten checklist, the only thing that earns budget is measurable operational efficiency.
