Our operational processes are locked inside the heads of a few key employees. How do we use the EOS Documenting Core Processes discipline on our exit runway to turn this tribal knowledge into a transferable asset?
Tribal knowledge is a liability that heavily discounts your business value because a buyer cannot scale what they cannot see. To capture a premium multiple, your operations must be documented and repeatable. Use the EOS® Process Component to solve this bottleneck on your runway.
Start by identifying your company's core processes, typically six to ten high-level workflows that run the business, such as your HR process, marketing process, and billing process. Apply the three-step documenting method: document, simplify, and package. Work with your leadership team to outline the major steps of each core process at a high level. Avoid creating massive, unreadable manuals; focus on capturing the twenty percent of the steps that drive eighty percent of the results.
Once documented, simplify the workflows to eliminate redundancies, then package them in a central, accessible digital library. Ensure that your team actually follows these documented processes by establishing them as the standard operating procedure. Measure compliance through your weekly scorecard metrics. When you can hand a buyer a clean, documented, and fully adopted operational playbook, you demonstrate that your business is a turnkey franchise-like system that can easily scale under new ownership.
