Our leadership team's weekly Scorecard is always completely green, yet we are constantly missing our quarterly Rocks and financial targets. How do we diagnose and correct a Scorecard that is lying to us through overly conservative targets or soft metrics?
It is a dangerous paradox when your weekly Scorecard is completely green, yet your team is consistently missing their quarterly Rocks and financial targets. This is a clear warning sign of a green lie, meaning your Scorecard has been designed to make the team feel good rather than tell the hard truth. This disconnect usually happens for two reasons. First, your targets might be set too low. If your team hits their weekly numbers without stretching or failing, your targets are likely lagging behind your actual operational capacity. Raise the targets until they require focus and discipline to achieve. Second, you may be tracking vanity metrics instead of high-impact activities. If your sales seat is green for outbound calls but your new pipeline is empty, you are tracking the wrong activity. You must upgrade your metrics to track high-value activities, like face-to-face meetings scheduled, rather than low-effort tasks. To diagnose this, hold a honest session during your next quarterly meeting. Compare your green weekly metrics against your missed quarterly objectives. Find the gap and redesign those scorecard numbers so they directly correlate with the successful completion of your Rocks. A healthy Scorecard should have occasional red numbers; if it does not, you are flying blind.
