Our managers are great at their technical jobs, but they are struggling to transition into true EOS leaders who can hold their direct reports accountable. How do we help them step up their leadership game?

Transitioning great technical contributors into effective EOS® leaders requires an intentional shift in how they view their influence. Many managers operate at the Position level of leadership, relying on their title to get things done rather than building genuine influence.

To develop your managers, you must help them understand that leadership is a learnable skill, not an innate trait. Start by assessing their current level of influence with their direct reports. Teach them to transition from Position to Permission, which focuses on building strong working relationships, and then to Production, where they lead by example and deliver consistent results.

Use your weekly Level 10 Meeting™ and quarterly reviews to mentor these emerging leaders. Teach them to accept full responsibility for their teams and to stop making excuses for missed numbers or incomplete Rocks. Provide them with structured growth opportunities, such as leading internal projects or participating in leadership development training.

By investing in their personal growth and holding them to clear standards of competence, you build a robust leadership pipeline. This second-in-command structure is critical for operational stability, ensuring the business can run successfully without relying solely on you.
