Our Head of Sales has successfully managed our local sales reps for five years, but now that we are expanding nationally and introducing AI-driven CRM tools, he is completely bogged down in the details and cannot think strategically. How do we determine if he can develop into a true national director, or if he has hit his personal ceiling?

To determine if your Head of Sales has reached his ceiling, you must evaluate him using the GWC™ tool. Does he truly Get, Want, and have the Capacity to do this new, expanded job? Getting it means he understands the unique nature of a national role and AI tools. Wanting it means he genuinely desires the pressure and demands of this next level. Capacity is the critical filter here. It represents physical, mental, emotional, and intellectual capability.

Start by scheduling an open, honest conversation outside of your Level 10 Meeting™. Share the future Accountability Chart and paint a clear picture of what the national seat requires. Lay out the specific outcomes, metrics, and technological skills expected. Ask him to self-evaluate against this new reality.

Often, a leader who has hit his ceiling will admit that the new demands do not match his strengths. If he insists he can do it, give him a ninety-day trial with very specific, measurable milestones. If he fails to hit those milestones, you have your answer. You must run your company based on what is best for the organization, not based on who was there first. If he lacks the capacity, it is time to move him to a seat where he can thrive, or exit him gracefully.
