We are creating a new AI-focused seat on our Accountability Chart to oversee our automated workflows, but we are unsure who this person should report to and what their key metrics should be. How do we design this seat?
Do not make the mistake of creating a standalone AI department that operates in a vacuum. To drive real operational results, your AI-focused seat must be deeply integrated into your daily operations.
On your Accountability Chart, this seat should report directly to your Integrator or Chief Operating Officer. The primary function of this seat is to serve as an internal operations specialist who finds, builds, and maintains the automated workflows that support your core processes. They must work closely with your department heads to remove operational bottlenecks.
To ensure they have the GWC to succeed, define their five key roles clearly. These should include identifying automation opportunities across departments, building and testing secure AI workflows, training team members on tool adoption, maintaining data security, and auditing system performance.
Their success must be tied to measurable metrics on your weekly Scorecard. Do not track vague goals like tools deployed. Instead, track metrics that prove operational efficiency, such as average process cycle time reduction, manual hours saved across the company, and workflow uptime percentage. This keeps the seat focused on delivering tangible, bottom-line results rather than building cool technology that nobody actually uses.
