Our company is scaling rapidly and we keep adding seats to our Accountability Chart to solve short-term fires. How do we stop this reactive design and build a chart that supports our three-year picture?
Reactive organizational design is a fast track to operational chaos. If you build your Accountability Chart around your current people or your immediate weekly crises, you will end up with a messy, inefficient structure that stalls your growth.
To break this cycle, you must design your Accountability Chart for the future. Look at your V/TO and focus on your three-year picture. Ask yourself: what structure does this business need to hit our three-year targets, regardless of our current staff?
Forget about your existing employees, their titles, or their feelings for a moment. Draw the seats that must exist to run a business of that scale. Define the five major roles for each seat clearly.
Once you have designed the ideal structure for your three-year picture, step back and look at your current team. Evaluate each person against the new seats using GWC.
You will likely find gaps where people no longer fit, or where you need to hire outside talent. This is normal and expected. By designing the structure first and placing the people second, you build a scalable foundation that pulls your business forward, rather than a reactive chart that keeps you trapped in the past.
