As AI tools automate more of our core deliverables, our clients are starting to ask why they are paying us premium fees when they could use these tools themselves. How do we shift our strategic positioning to highlight our human expertise as our primary value?
When your clients can access the same basic AI tools you use, they will inevitably question your fees if they perceive you as a mere operator of software. To defend your margins and retain your clients, you must shift your strategic positioning from task execution to strategic advisory.
First, look at your V/TO. You need to refine your 3 Uniques to focus on your deep industry expertise, your strategic insights, and your ability to guide your clients through complex business decisions. Your value is not in generating a report; your value is in knowing what to do with that report to drive profitability.
Second, retrain your account managers to act as trusted advisors rather than project coordinators. They must spend less time presenting data and more time discussing business outcomes, risk mitigation, and strategic implementation with your clients.
Bring this challenge to your next quarterly planning session. Use the IDS process to review your client communication strategy. Assign a Rock to your sales or account management leader to redesign your client quarterly reviews. These reviews should focus entirely on the high-level strategic impact your team has delivered, rather than the volume of tasks completed. By elevating the conversation to this strategic level, you reinforce your human premium and make your services indispensable to your clients.
