We have a highly experienced leader who complies with the physical requirements of the Level 10 Meeting but sits in complete silence as a form of passive resistance to the EOS process itself, hoping the system will eventually phase out. How do we break through this silent rebellion and force them to engage with the model?
When a senior leader complies with the physical requirement of attending the Level 10 Meeting™ but uses silence as a form of passive resistance, it is a direct threat to team alignment. This behavior is often a calculated attempt to wait out the EOS® process, hoping that if they stay quiet, the discipline will eventually fade away.
The Integrator must address this head-on, both inside and outside the meeting. During the IDS® portion of the meeting, the facilitator should specifically call on the silent leader for their input on high-priority issues. Do not let them hide behind a simple pass. Ask direct questions like, what is your perspective on this issue, or how does this decision affect your department?
If the silence continues, the Integrator must have a one-on-one conversation outside the meeting. Use the GWC™ tool to evaluate if they truly get, want, and have the capacity for their seat, which includes active leadership in the weekly pulse.
Explain that silence during healthy conflict is a form of non-compliance. In an EOS culture, leaders are required to enter the danger, participate in debate, and support the final decision. If they cannot or will not engage in the process, they do not belong on the leadership team.
