We have a highly skilled Chief Technology Officer who is great at their technical job but absolutely refuses to participate in our quarterly Rock setting or update their Scorecard. How do we address a seat holder who is a Right Person in the Right Seat for operations but a poor fit for running the operating system?

When you have a highly skilled leader who delivers great operational results but refuses to engage with the operating system, you have a classic Right Seat, Wrong Person issue. This situation is dangerous because it sends a message to the rest of the organization that compliance with the company's operating system is optional for high performers.

You must address this issue by redefining what GWC™ means for their seat. GWC™ stands for Get It, Want It, and Capacity to do the job. In a company running on EOS®, the capacity to do the job includes the ability to lead, manage, and execute using the company's established tools. It is not just about technical output.

Have a direct, unfiltered conversation with your leader. Explain that updating their Scorecard, setting Rocks, and actively participating in the Level 10 Meeting™ are non-negotiable requirements of their leadership seat.

Ask them what obstacles are preventing them from using the tools and help them solve those issues. But make it clear that their technical genius does not exempt them from the operational discipline required of everyone else. If they continue to reject the system, you must begin looking for a replacement who can deliver both the technical results and the operational alignment your business needs to scale.
