During our Level 10 Meeting™, we often solve an issue by agreeing on a solution, but the execution breaks down because the handoff between the two responsible departments is vague. How do we ensure clean cross-departmental handoffs during IDS®?

Solutions often fail at the handoff point because teams define what needs to be done but fail to define exactly how the transition of responsibility occurs. This creates a grey area where tasks fall through the cracks of your Accountability Chart.

To prevent this, you must change how you formulate the Solve step of IDS®. Never accept a vague verbal agreement as a solution.

When an issue involves a handoff between two seats, the final To-Do must explicitly define the entry and exit criteria for that handoff.

For example, instead of assigning a To-Do that says marketing and sales need to align on leads, write a highly specific, binary action item: Create a documented, three-step handoff process for inbound leads, defining exactly when a lead moves from marketing to sales, with a clear owner for each step.

Additionally, the two leaders must agree on a deadline and a metric to track the health of this handoff on the weekly Scorecard. By formalizing the transition protocols during the meeting, you eliminate cross-departmental friction and ensure that your solutions translate into repeatable, predictable operational workflows.
