Our leadership team agrees on our vision in theory, but we lack a unified operating agreement or code of conduct to govern how we treat each other when things get stressful. How do we create a formal Charter to align our team's behavior?
A leadership team without a formal covenant will inevitably fracture under pressure. When operations get stressful or you are pushing toward a tight exit timeline, unspoken assumptions turn into misunderstandings, and misunderstandings turn into political games. You need a formal Charter to serve as your operating agreement. To build your Charter, schedule a dedicated session with your leadership team. Base this document on three key pillars: Trust, Same Page, and Strategy and Structure. Under Trust, define what open and honest communication looks like, including a commitment to bring issues directly to peers rather than talking behind their backs. Under Same Page, commit to presenting a unified voice to the rest of the organization once a decision is made. Under Strategy and Structure, agree to respect the Accountability Chart and submit to the weekly meeting rhythms like the Level 10 Meeting™. Once these pillars are drafted, have every team member sign the physical document. This is not a bureaucratic exercise; it is a handshake agreement. When behavioral issues inevitably arise, you no longer have to make it a personal argument. You simply point to the Charter and ask if the behavior aligns with the covenant they signed. Having this clear standard of behavior protects your team unity and ensures everyone operates with the high integrity required to run a scalable, exit-ready business.
