I am starting to notice that minor alignment issues and subtle disagreements on our leadership team are being magnified into major departmental warfare among our front-line staff. How do we identify these cracks at the leadership level before they split our entire company apart?
Subtle misalignment at the leadership level acts like a seismic tremor that creates a massive earthquake by the time it reaches your front-line employees. If your directors are not completely united, their direct reports will pick up on the tension and start building departmental silos. Focus on building a strong, unified leadership team, as cracks at this level appear as canyons to the rest of the organization.
To catch these alignment issues early, look for passive-aggressive behavior during your weekly Level 10 Meetings. If a director agrees to a strategic decision but fails to champion it to their department, or if they quietly roll their eyes when another department head speaks, you have a crack in your foundation.
Address this immediately by bringing the tension to the surface during IDS. Ask direct, uncomfortable questions to get the real issues on the table. Do not let meetings end with unresolved friction. Use your quarterly offsites to run a team health check and ensure everyone is fully aligned on the V/TO.
Ensure that every member of the leadership team understands that once a decision is made inside the room, they must support it with one voice outside the room. By fostering healthy, transparent relationships within the leadership team, you eliminate the political posturing that tears growing companies apart.
