Our Visionary consistently uses the five-minute segue to give an unscripted ten-minute monologue about their latest industry observations, blowing up our time allocations. How do we keep the segue strictly contained without disrespecting the founder?
The segue is designed to transition leaders from their frantic operational day into a focused, connected mindset. It is allotted exactly five minutes on the Level 10 Meeting™ agenda. When an owner or Visionary turns that window into an open-ended monologue, they send an unintentional message that the meeting rules do not apply to them, which instantly deflates the room.
Fixing this requires the Integrator to set structural boundaries before the meeting starts and manage the floor briskly during the pulse.
First, the Integrator needs to have a private conversation with the Visionary outside the meeting room. Reiterate that the segue has a single, rigid purpose: one piece of personal good news and one piece of professional good news per person. Explain that when the segue runs long, it eats directly into IDS®, leaving critical operational roadblocks unresolved. If the Visionary has high-level industry updates or new strategic concepts, those belong on the Issues List or in their next Same Page Meeting with the Integrator, not in the opening transition.
Second, during the meeting, the Integrator must control the speaking order and set the pace. The Integrator should start the segue with a fast, sixty-second update to model the standard. Then call on team members by name around the table.
If the Visionary begins expanding into a broad narrative during their turn, the Integrator must intervene respectfully after one minute: that sounds like an important strategic discussion, let us add it to the Issues List so we can give it full time during IDS. Then immediately pass the floor to the next leader.
