Our leadership team is great at hitting their weekly scorecard numbers, but they completely ignore our long-term V/TO goals, treating them as irrelevant exercises. How do we connect our daily operations with our exit-ready strategy?
It is common for a leadership team to get so caught up in the whirlwind of daily operations that they treat the V/TO as a document that only gets dusted off once a year. However, if your team is executing in a strategic vacuum, you are likely building a business that is not actually exit-ready.
To bridge this gap, you must make the V/TO a living, breathing document in your weekly operations. During your Level 10 Meetings, do not just focus on the scorecard and current Rocks. Review your headlines and issues through the lens of your long-term targets. Every major decision should be filtered through your three-year picture and your exit goals.
When setting quarterly Rocks, ensure that at least some of them are directly linked to building your exit-ready superstructure, such as documenting core processes or implementing automated systems. If your Rocks are purely tactical and operational, your long-term strategy will always get pushed to the back burner.
Force your department heads to connect their weekly scorecard metrics directly to these strategic goals. If they cannot explain how their daily actions help the company move toward its target, their metrics are likely measuring the wrong things. By linking daily execution to your long-term vision, you ensure the team is building real, transferable value.
