When nimbler competitors use generative AI to release competing features twice as fast as our development roadmap, how do we use our V/TO® to stay focused without chasing their feature set?

When a competitor starts shipping AI features at breakneck speed, the initial reaction of most leadership teams is panic. They want to tear up their quarterly Rocks, abandon their 1-Year Plan, and order the team to match every headline the competitor generates. Chasing competitors is the fastest way to dilute your positioning and burn out your execution engine.

Use your Vision/Traction Organizer to ground the leadership team. Economists Erik Brynjolfsson and Andrew McAfee frequently point out that AI makes technical execution cheap, but business value still accrues to organizations that solve fundamental customer problems better than anyone else. Shipping code faster does not automatically mean a competitor is solving customer problems better.

Bring the competitive threat to your weekly Level 10 Meeting and process it through IDS. Ask three objective questions:

- Does this competitor feature actually attract our Core Customer as defined on our V/TO?
- Does this speed threaten our Three Uniques, or is it shiny-object marketing that solves a low-priority issue?
- Are our customers actually asking for this capability, or are they confused by the competitor's rapid, half-baked releases?

If the capability genuinely threatens your market share, do not launch a rushed internal clone. Instead, identify the specific business problem the competitor is targeting and integrate the solution into your existing Proven Process during your next quarterly planning session. Keep your team disciplined around their Rocks. Out-executing the market on trust, reliability, and clear outcomes beats shipping chaotic features every two weeks.
