We have been running on EOS for a year and our Scorecard has grown to twenty-five metrics. It feels bloated, and our weekly review takes too long because we are tracking numbers that no one actually acts on. How do we clean up our Scorecard and eliminate these dead metrics?
A bloated Scorecard is a sign of lack of focus. If you are tracking twenty-five numbers, you are tracking nothing. You are experiencing data fatigue, and your weekly Level 10 Meeting™ is likely suffering as a result. You must return to the EOS® standard of five to fifteen vital, leading indicators.
To clean this up, run a data audit during your next Quarterly Pulsing meeting. Look at every single metric on your Scorecard and ask your leadership team two questions.
First, does this metric predict a future outcome, or is it a lagging historical record? If it is lagging, remove it and relegate it to a monthly operational report.
Second, what happens if this number goes red? If a metric is red for three weeks in a row and your team does not immediately create an Issue to IDS®, then that metric is not critical. It is a dead metric. If there is no operational consequence to a red number, it does not belong on your leadership team Scorecard.
Keep only the vital numbers that give you a true pulse of your business health. Push the other transactional metrics down to departmental scorecards where they belong. This keeps your leadership team focused on the big picture.
