I am preparing my business for a clean exit and need to transition the facilitation of our Level 10 Meeting™ to my successor, but every time I try to sit back as a passive observer, the team keeps looking to me for the final decision on every issue. How do I successfully step out of the meeting dynamic?
If you are preparing for a clean exit, you must stop being the focal point of your Level 10 Meeting™. As long as you facilitate or dominate the conversation, your team will never step up to run the business autonomously. You are keeping them dependent on you, which directly lowers the value of your company.
To transition facilitation successfully, hand the reins of the meeting to your Integrator or a designated successor. Your new role is to sit in the owner box, which means you speak last, not first.
During the IDS® portion, when an issue is raised, resist the urge to jump in with the solution. Even if you know the answer, remain silent and let the team debate. If they look to you for approval, redirect their gaze by asking, what does the team think we should do, or how does the Integrator want to handle this.
Your goal is to build their problem-solving muscle. If you solve every problem, they will never learn how to do it without you. By forcing them to find their own solutions, you build a self-sustaining business that can operate, grow, and thrive long after you have exited. Your silence is the ultimate test of their readiness to lead.
