Our weekly Level 10 Meeting is efficient, but we have several red numbers that have been missed for six weeks straight without any real consequences or change. How do we break this cycle of scorecard apathy and turn red metrics into actual operational solutions?
When scorecard numbers remain red week after week with no action taken, your team has developed scorecard apathy. This occurs because you are treating the scorecard as a passive dashboard rather than an active tool for driving accountability and solving problems.
To break this cycle, you must enforce the rule that any metric missed for two consecutive weeks must be dropped down to the Issues List of your Level 10 Meeting™ for systematic resolution. You cannot simply read the red number, accept an excuse, and move on.
Use the IDS® (Identify, Discuss, Solve) process to get to the root cause of the missed metric. Ask tough questions. Is the target unrealistic due to changing market conditions? Is the metric owner lacking the capacity or resources to hit the number? Or is there a broken process that is bottlenecking their efforts?
Once you identify the root cause, create a specific, actionable to-do or Rock to resolve the issue. If the target is truly unattainable, adjust it. If the process is broken, fix it. By forcing your team to actively address chronic red numbers, you restore a healthy culture of accountability. Your scorecard will once again become a powerful driving force behind your business performance.
