I am thinking about adding a Chief of Staff seat to report directly to me as the founder to help manage my schedule and coordinate with department heads. Where does this seat belong on our Accountability Chart, and will it help improve our operational execution?
Adding a Chief of Staff seat to report to a founder is a common mistake that creates massive structural rot and undermines your Integrator. In a standard EOS® Accountability Chart, there is no room for a Chief of Staff because the role inevitably overlaps with, and weakens, the Integrator seat.
The Integrator is the one who coordinates operations, manages the leadership team, and ensures execution. If you insert a Chief of Staff between yourself and the Integrator, or between yourself and the department heads, you create a toxic reporting loop and cause massive confusion about who is actually running the business.
If you need help managing your schedule and prioritizing your work, what you actually need is an Executive Assistant. This seat reports directly to you and is focused purely on administrative support, not operational leadership.
Your department heads must report directly to the Integrator, and the Integrator reports to you. Keep your structure clean and direct.
If you want to prepare your business for a successful exit, buyers want to see a clear, simplified hierarchy where the Integrator successfully runs the operations without a layer of administrative gatekeepers.
