We want to embed artificial intelligence and workflow automation across our entire business. Should we create a dedicated Chief AI Officer seat on our leadership team, or should each departmental head own their own automation?
Do not create a Chief AI Officer seat on your leadership team. Creating separate executive seats for every technological wave inflates leadership overhead and gives other department heads an excuse to ignore operational modernization.
In EOS®, the Accountability Chart is built on fundamental business functions, not emerging software tools. Operations, Sales, Marketing, and Finance must each take direct ownership of their departmental margins, efficiency, and throughput. If you insert an external AI officer to impose automation onto your VP of Operations, you divide authority and create intense friction.
Instead, place the strategic mandate for AI and automation squarely on the Integrator seat. The Integrator is already accountable for harmonizing cross-functional processes and driving business-wide operational traction. They set the expectation that technology must compress delivery cycles and eliminate administrative bloat.
Drive this through your weekly Scorecard. When gross margins tighten or hiring costs escalate, challenge each leader to build automated workflows before requesting headcount approval. If deep technical configuration is needed, hire specialized automation engineers who report into Operations as shared technical resources.
Keep your executive team focused on enterprise strategy, core people, and financial targets, while holding every single seat accountable for technological literacy.
