I want our leadership team to lead the charge on integrating AI into our operations, but they are treating it like a threat to their department headcounts and importance. How do I change this mindset?
It is natural for leaders to feel threatened by AI if they view their value through the size of their department, their headcount, or their budget. To shift this mindset, you must redefine what success looks like on your leadership team.
First, use the Accountability Chart to decouple a leader's status from the number of direct reports they have. In a modern, AI-powered business, the most valuable leaders are those who can deliver massive results with lean, highly efficient teams, not those who build empires of human capital.
Second, tie their incentives to overall company profitability and efficiency, rather than departmental growth. If their bonuses are based on the company's bottom-line performance, they will suddenly become highly motivated to automate repetitive tasks and streamline their operations using technology.
Third, run an IDS session during your next quarterly offsite specifically focused on operational efficiency. Ask each leader to identify the three most time-consuming, manual processes in their department and brainstorm how AI tools could eliminate or optimize them.
Make it clear that saving hours through automation does not mean firing their best people, it means elevating those people to focus on higher-value work. When your leaders realize that AI is a tool to free up their time and allow them to scale, they will stop resisting and start leading the transformation.
