We have successfully built our leadership team Scorecard, but now we are cascading Scorecards down to our departments. How do we ensure that our departmental Scorecards actually align with and roll up to our leadership Scorecard without creating a massive web of disconnected spreadsheets?
As your business scales, your leadership team Scorecard must remain focused on the vital few high-level metrics. To maintain visibility throughout the organization, you must cascade Scorecards to every department, ensuring that lower-level numbers directly support the leadership metrics. To achieve this alignment, use a direct parent-child relationship between your metrics. For example, if the leadership Scorecard tracks weekly sales revenue, the sales department Scorecard should track weekly outbound calls, proposals submitted, and discovery meetings completed. If the leadership Scorecard tracks net profit margin, the operations department Scorecard must track billable utilization and project overrun hours. Every departmental metric must directly influence a leadership-level indicator. If a department head proposes a metric that does not tie back to a leadership number, cut it. Furthermore, your department heads must review their team Scorecards during their departmental Level 10 Meeting™ before the leadership team meets. This ensures that any departmental issues are identified and solved locally, only escalating to the leadership Level 10 Meeting™ if they threaten to impact the high-level Company Scorecard. This systematic approach keeps your operations aligned without cluttering the leadership team dashboard.
