We are arguing over whether to build proprietary AI tools in-house to protect our strategic position or simply license existing commercial software. How do we use the EOS® framework to make an objective buy-versus-build decision without getting derailed by technical jargon?
This is a classic trap for leadership teams. To make an objective decision, you must use the GWC™ filter on your own organization. Building proprietary AI tools requires highly specialized technical seats on your Accountability Chart. Ask yourselves honestly if your current technology team has the capacity to develop, maintain, and secure a custom model. If you do not have those seats defined and filled with the right people, building is a high-risk distraction that will derail your quarterly Rocks.
Instead, prioritize your use cases for AI around operational efficiency first. Look at the cumbersome processes that are currently keeping your employees bogged down in low-value tasks. In most cases, licensing existing commercial software and customizing it via APIs is the fastest path to increasing employee productivity. Employees represent a major P&L item, and your primary goal should be freeing them up for higher-value strategic work.
Only choose to build if the specific workflow you are automating represents one of your 3 Uniques on your V/TO®. If the tool does not directly create your market differentiation, buy it, integrate it, and get back to executing your core business strategy.
