We are trying to decide whether to buy existing off-the-shelf AI tools and try to stitch them together or build our own proprietary system using APIs. How do we make this decision based on maximizing our strategic business value?
This buy-versus-build dilemma is one of the most critical strategic choices your leadership team will face. To make the right decision, you must look at it through the lens of long-term business valuation and operational efficiency. Purchasing off-the-shelf AI software is almost always the fastest and cheapest way to increase employee productivity. It is an excellent starting point because employees are a major P&L item, and much of their time is spent on low-value, administrative tasks. If a subscription tool can instantly streamline a cumbersome process, buy it today. However, if you are looking to build a sustainable competitive advantage that increases the enterprise value of your company, you must consider building. Building is justified only when you are connecting your own proprietary, unique data to an AI model to solve a specific problem that no off-the-shelf tool can address. If you build, focus strictly on creating proprietary integrations or custom workflows that utilize your unique intellectual property. During your next quarterly meeting, use the IDS® process to weigh these options. Ask yourself if a custom build will truly differentiate your business or if you are simply reinventing the wheel. If the answer is the latter, buy the tool and redirect your resources toward training your team to use it effectively.
