Our quarterly EOS® cycle feels like an endless conveyor belt of Rocks, and our leadership team is completely exhausted. How do we build cognitive breathing room into our execution without lowering our performance targets?
Exhaustion on a leadership team is not a sign of high performance; it is a sign of operational overload and a lack of white space. When your team is constantly running from one task to the next without a moment to think, your strategic decision-making degrades, and you begin setting low-quality Rocks. To resolve this, you must systematically build strategic pauses into your quarterly execution cycle.
- Normalize taking regular, unscheduled time with no specific assignment. This is dedicated white space designed to let your leaders step back, reflect, and gain objectivity on the business. Encourage your team to schedule at least ninety minutes of uninterrupted thinking time each week.
- Use your mid-quarter Rock review to actively practice reduction. If you find your team is drowning under the weight of fifteen different initiatives, mathematically lessen the workload by delaying, delegating, or dropping non-essential projects. It is far better to execute three Rocks with absolute excellence than to half-bake ten of them.
- Use your quarterly sessions not just as planning meetings, but as cognitive reboots. Give your team the permission to turn off their operational brains, disconnect from their email, and engage in high-level strategic thinking.
Reclaiming your time to think is what allows you to lead with clarity and run a clean, scalable operation.
