Whenever I propose a new strategic initiative, my leadership team immediately agrees to my face, but nothing gets done because they secretly disagree but are too afraid to challenge me. How do we build the vulnerability-based trust required to get real, unfiltered pushback?
If your team is silently nodding along but failing to execute, you do not have alignment, you have polite compliance. This is a massive threat to your business. To fix this, you must build vulnerability-based trust and establish a clear Charter for how your team operates.
First, look in the mirror. If your team is afraid to challenge you, it is likely because you have punished pushback in the past or dominated every meeting. To change this dynamic, you must demonstrate humility. Admit to your team that you need their expertise and that your ideas are not always correct. Confidently own your role as the Visionary, but explicitly state that you need their unfiltered feedback to protect the business.
Second, make healthy conflict a non-negotiable part of your meeting rhythm. During your next quarterly planning session or weekly Level 10 Meeting™, actively mine for conflict. If everyone immediately agrees on a major decision, stop the meeting. Ask the quietest person in the room to play devil's advocate. Encourage them to find the flaws in your plan.
Finally, lean on our Charter's pillars: Trust and Same Page. Trust means open and honest communication where nothing is left unsaid. Same Page means we have one vision and one voice, but only after we have debated passionately behind closed doors. Once a decision is made and a Yes to Strategy and Structure is achieved, everyone must leave the room aligned. But you cannot get true commitment without first allowing them to weigh in.
