My directors are always polite to each other in meetings, but I know there is deep political maneuvering and gossip happening behind closed doors. How do we build genuine trust so we can have real, unfiltered debates?
Polite meetings and backchannel gossip are classic symptoms of artificial harmony. This behavior is incredibly destructive because it prevents your team from solving the real issues holding the company back. To break this cycle, you must actively foster healthy relationships within the leadership team.
Building trust takes time and deliberate effort. Start by encouraging vulnerability. As the leader, you must go first. Admit when you make a mistake, share your struggles, and ask your team for feedback. When your directors see you being open, they will feel safe doing the same.
Next, introduce the concept of healthy conflict. Make it clear that entering into passionate, unfiltered debates about business issues is not only allowed, but required. During your Level 10 Meetings, when you sense someone is holding back, mine for conflict. Ask the uncomfortable questions and force the team to get their real opinions on the table.
Once the team realizes they can disagree passionately and still walk out of the room as a united front, the political maneuvering will stop. This shift reduces wasted energy, builds a cohesive team, and accelerates your operational results.
