Our leadership team meetings are incredibly polite, but I know people are biting their tongues on major strategic threats because they want to avoid hurting feelings. How do we build the foundational trust required to turn these polite updates into intense, healthy conflict?
Artificial harmony is highly dangerous for a business preparing for a clean exit. When leadership team members hold back their real opinions to keep the peace, you make poor decisions based on incomplete information. Healthy conflict cannot exist without vulnerability based trust.
To build this trust, the leadership team must realize that conflict is not personal. It is about pursuing the best path forward for the business. You can start building this vulnerability by having team members share their personal histories, their greatest professional strengths, and their areas of weakness during your next quarterly offsite.
During your Level 10 Meeting sessions, the Integrator must actively mine for conflict. If you notice a leader quiet during a major discussion, or if their body language signals disagreement, call them out. Force them to voice their perspective. You must make it safe for people to disagree, challenge the status quo, and even admit when they do not know the answer.
Remind the team that true alignment only happens when everyone has had their say. Even if a leader does not get their way, they will commit to the decision if they feel they were heard. Once your team experiences the relief of resolving a difficult issue through open, honest debate, the fear of conflict will fade, and your operational speed will skyrocket.
