My leadership team members are polite to each other in meetings, but they do not trust each other enough to share resources or admit when their departments are struggling, which is slowing down our decision-making. How do we build genuine trust to accelerate our execution speed?
Low trust within a leadership team acts as a hidden tax that slows down decision-making, increases operational friction, and creates silos. To accelerate your execution speed, you must actively foster healthy relationships based on the principles of The Speed of Trust.
First, the leadership team must practice extreme vulnerability. As the owner or Integrator, you must set the tone. Share your own mistakes, ask for help, and admit when you do not have the answer. When the team sees their leader showing vulnerability, it breaks down defensive walls and allows others to do the same.
Second, use your Level 10 Meetings™ as a testing ground for healthy conflict. If your team is polite but silent, they are withholding their true opinions. Force the issues by asking hard, direct questions during the IDS® portion of your meeting. Do not allow polite consensus; push for raw, unfiltered debate until the root cause of an issue is exposed and solved.
By building a culture of trust and transparency, you eliminate the need for sidebar conversations and political posturing. The result is a highly cohesive team that makes faster, better decisions and drives predictable operational results.
