My leadership team members are obsessed with status management. During our Level 10 Meetings, they focus on looking smart and covering their bases rather than vulnerability and solving real issues. How do I break this defensive posture?
Status management is a silent killer of execution. When your leaders are more concerned with proving they are right or keeping themselves safe than with being vulnerable, your company stalls. They are treating your weekly meeting like a performance review rather than a tool for solving operational problems.
To break this posture, you must build safety by sharing vulnerability first. As the owner or Integrator, you need to call out your own mistakes, missed Rocks, and operational failures openly. Show them that there is no penalty for saying I do not know or I need help. When you lower your shield, you give your team permission to do the same.
Next, strictly enforce the IDS process in your Level 10 Meeting™. When an issue is raised, do not allow intellectual posturing or defensive storytelling. Force the team to identify the root cause of the issue within sixty seconds. Shift the focus from who made the mistake to what system failed. By separating the person from the problem, you lower the stakes of being wrong and turn defensive posturing into collaborative problem solving.
