We want to adopt AI tools across our departments, but our leadership team members are operating in silos and refusing to collaborate on cross-functional automation. How do we break down these barriers to run an AI-powered operation?
Siloed behavior is driven by fear and misaligned incentives. If your department heads are measured solely on their individual departmental targets, they will naturally protect their resources and resist cross-functional AI integrations that might disrupt their daily workflows or decrease their headcount. To build an AI-powered operation, you must realign their incentives and focus on collective outcomes.
First, restructure your leadership compensation and performance metrics to tie a significant portion of their bonuses to overall company profitability and the achievement of major, cross-functional V/TO® goals. This forces them to care about efficiency gains outside their own departments.
Second, use your quarterly planning sessions to establish a shared cross-functional Rock focused on automation. For example, instead of having sales and operations run their own separate tools, create a single Rock to automate the handoff between sales closed and operational delivery.
Third, assign joint accountability for this Rock to both the Sales Director and the Operations Director. They must work together to map the process and implement the AI solutions.
Finally, foster a culture of rapid experimentation. Encourage your team to run small, low-risk pilots using AI tools to solve specific bottlenecks. Share the successful results of these experiments in your Level 10 Meetings™ to build excitement and show the team that automation is a tool to elevate their roles, not eliminate them.
