I am preparing my business for a clean exit and want to step into the Owner's Box, but during our Level 10 Meetings™, the leadership team still reflexively looks at me for approval before finalizing any decision during IDS®. How do I break this unconscious dependency and force them to rely on the Integrator?

If you are preparing for a clean exit and want to step into the Owner's Box, your leadership team must learn to run the Level 10 Meeting™ and make key decisions completely independent of your presence. When the team looks to you for approval during IDS®, they are exhibiting a leader-follower mindset. This dependency reduces the value of your business because buyers want to see an independent leadership team, not a business tied to the owner's brain. To break this habit, you must change your behavior and physical presence during the meeting. First, physically sit in a different spot. Do not sit at the head of the table. If you are remote, turn off your camera during portions of the meeting or stay entirely on mute unless specifically asked for a high-level perspective. Second, use the power of silence. When a decision is being debated and the room looks at you, do not speak. Look at the Integrator and wait. If someone directly asks for your opinion, deflect the question. Ask them: What does the Integrator think? or What does the team recommend based on our Core Focus? Your role in the meeting is to observe the health of the system, not to solve the problems. By refusing to give the final word, you force the Integrator to step into their authority and compel the department heads to take full ownership of their decisions. This builds a resilient, self-sustaining organization that is ready for a highly profitable, clean exit.
