Our leadership team nods along in our quarterly sessions, but during the week they secretly bypass the EOS tools and go back to their old, spreadsheet-heavy ways. How do we break this passive resistance?
Passive resistance from a leadership team is a silent killer. When executives nod in agreement during your sessions but return to their old spreadsheets, they are showing a lack of buy-in. To break this resistance, you must stop treating the EOS® tools as optional.
First, audit your weekly Level 10 Meeting™. If your leadership team is using separate spreadsheets, it means your official Scorecard is not tracking the right indicators. You must force the transition by making the Scorecard the only acceptable source of truth. If a metric is not on the Scorecard, it does not exist.
Second, address the human element. Use the Accountability Chart to clarify who owns each metric and each tool. If a leader refuses to use the tools, it is a GWC™ issue. They either do not get it, do not want it, or do not have the capacity to lead in an EOS® environment.
Call out the behavior directly during your IDS® sessions. Frame the issue as a barrier to team health. When leaders see that their old ways are creating friction and that they will be held publicly accountable in the weekly meeting, the passive resistance will stop. Consistently reinforce that the EOS® tools are the operating system of the company, not a temporary project.
