We have an odd-numbered leadership team that is constantly split into opposing camps during voting on major strategic decisions, leading to paralysis. How do we break these permanent deadlocks on the leadership team without the Visionary just playing the dictator?
Democracy does not work on a healthy leadership team. If you are relying on a majority vote to make major business decisions, you are setting yourself up for political posturing, siloed thinking, and organizational paralysis. Cracks at this level appear as canyons to the rest of the company, and a divided leadership team will destroy execution.
To break deadlocks, you must rely on your Accountability Chart and your leadership team structure. First, run the issue through the IDS® process. Dedicate time to truly identify the root cause of the disagreement, discuss it openly without holding back, and work toward a collaborative solution. Healthy conflict is required to build peer trust.
If the team is still deadlocked after a healthy debate, the decision falls to the person who owns that specific seat on the Accountability Chart. For example, if the issue is an operational one, the head of operations makes the final call. If it is a cross-departmental issue that affects the entire company, the Integrator makes the final decision.
The role of the leadership team is to provide input, debate vigorously, and support the final decision once it is made. Once the seat owner or the Integrator makes the call, everyone on the team must align behind it, even if they initially disagreed. This is how you maintain a cohesive, functional, and healthy leadership team.
