My leadership team is so addicted to fighting daily fires that they treat our weekly Level 10 Meeting as an update session rather than a place to solve root-cause organizational issues. How do we break this firefighting addiction and get them to elevate their focus to strategic execution?

Treating the Level 10 Meeting as a status update is a common trap that keeps your business stuck in neutral. To break this habit, you must enforce the IDS process with absolute discipline.

Begin your meetings by keeping the reporting section fast and strict. The scorecard review, Rock review, and people headlines should take no more than fifteen minutes total. If an item is on track, move on. If an item is off track, drop it down to the Issues list immediately without discussing it.

Once you get to the IDS portion of the meeting, do not allow your team to discuss minor tactical symptoms. When an issue is brought forward, ask the owner of that issue to define the root cause in one sentence. Challenge the team to look at the business through the lens of your Accountability Chart and V/TO rather than their daily task lists.

By focusing your energy on solving three to five major systemic issues every week instead of talking about twenty minor fires, you teach your leadership team to think like strategic owners. They will quickly realize that solving root causes prevents the daily fires from igniting in the first place.
