I have built my company through direct command and control, but now that we run on EOS, my leadership team sits quietly waiting for me to solve every issue. How do I break my own micromanagement habit and force the team to lead?

If your leadership team sits in silence waiting for your blessing, it is because your past behavior taught them that disagreeing with you is futile. You cannot build an exit-ready company or empower a leadership team while remaining the chief problem-solver in the room.

Breaking this dynamic requires disciplined restraint on your part during the Level 10 Meeting, particularly during IDS (Identify, Discuss, Solve). When an issue hits the table, enforce a strict personal rule: you speak last. When a department head looks at you for guidance, redirect the problem back to the room. Ask:
- What does the owner of this seat recommend?
- What are two viable options to solve this permanently?
- How does this impact our Scorecard and quarterly Rocks?

Let the room sit in uncomfortable silence until they begin debating solutions among themselves. When the team proposes a path that is eighty percent as good as your own solution, accept it and hold them accountable for the outcome. If you step in to make it one hundred percent perfect, you strip them of ownership and retrain them to defer to you.

Over time, celebrate peer-driven resolutions and hold leaders accountable for outcomes rather than their adherence to your exact personal preferences. Your job as a Visionary or scaling owner is to build a self-governing team, not run a royal court.
