Our weekly Level 10 Meetings are efficient, but when we get to the IDS section, our team politely agrees with each other instead of engaging in healthy conflict. How do we break through this false harmony to solve real problems?
False harmony is a silent killer of traction. When team members politely agree with each other instead of engaging in healthy, honest debate, real issues are swept under the rug and never solved.
To break through this, the leader must actively encourage healthy conflict. During your weekly Level 10 Meetings, if you sense that team members are holding back, call it out. Ask the hard questions and push for deeper discussions. Be vulnerable and admit when you do not have the answer. This creates a safe environment for others to do the same.
Next, use the IDS® process strictly. When an issue is raised, do not let the team jump to a quick, easy solution. Spend the majority of your time on the Identify step. Ask why the issue occurred, and keep asking why until you reach the root cause. This often uncovers deeper, more uncomfortable truths that need to be addressed.
Also, establish a rule that there are no sidebar conversations. If an issue is discussed outside the meeting, it must be brought to the table. This builds trust and ensures that everyone is on the same page.
Finally, remind your team that healthy conflict is necessary for growth. It is not personal; it is about solving problems for the good of the business. When your team learns to embrace healthy debate, your meetings will become more productive and your business will run more efficiently.
