My leadership team members only care about their own departments and refuse to collaborate on cross-functional business issues, treating their areas as personal fiefdoms. How do we break down these silos and force them to act as a unified team?

Silos on a leadership team will paralyze your growth and destroy your company valuation. When department heads view themselves as advocates for their own teams rather than owners of the entire company, your business cannot scale. A buyer looking for an exit-ready company wants to see a cohesive, unified leadership team, not a set of disconnected functional silos.

You must realign your team around the concept of the first team. Their first team is not the department they manage. Their first team is the leadership team. Every decision they make must be filtered through what is best for the entire organization, not just what makes their department look good.

Start by reviewing your V/TO® and your company scorecard. If your metrics and quarterly Rocks only reward individual departmental performance, you are actively incentivizing siloed behavior. Rewrite your goals so that the leadership team is mutually accountable for high-level company targets.

During your Level 10 Meeting™, push your team to solve issues that cross functional boundaries. When the operations director and the sales director have to collaborate to solve a client delivery problem using IDS®, they learn to share ownership. If a leader refuses to step out of their fiefdom and collaborate, they do not GWC™ their seat on the Accountability Chart. You cannot build a healthy, scalable business with leaders who protect their own territory at the expense of the company.
