Our departments are operating as independent kingdoms. My head of marketing and head of sales only talk to each other to complain, and my ops team ignores them both. How do we break down these operational silos at the leadership level?
Department silos start at the top. If your leadership team members behave like department heads rather than business leaders, their teams will do the exact same thing.
To break this, you must enforce the concept of the first team. The leadership team is every member's primary team. Their second team is the department they run. This means when they sit in a leadership meeting, they must leave their department hats at the door and make decisions based solely on what is best for the entire company.
Use the Accountability Chart to clarify boundaries and dependencies. Often, silos exist because of overlapping responsibilities or a lack of clear ownership. Use the IDS process to tackle the friction between departments. Do not let them complain in private. Bring the issues to the table and solve them together.
Additionally, align their Rocks. If your marketing head has a Rock to generate leads, but your sales head has a Rock that requires a completely different target audience, they are set up to fail. Create shared Rocks that require collaboration to achieve. When their success is tied to mutual execution, the silos will naturally crumble.
