My leadership team is incredibly polite during our weekly meetings, but I know they have deep disagreements that they only discuss in private. How do we break this artificial harmony and get them to debate issues openly?

Artificial harmony is a silent killer of leadership teams. When leaders avoid healthy conflict during meetings, they end up gossiping in hallways and executing plans half-heartedly. This lack of healthy debate leads to poor decisions and fractured trust.

To break this artificial harmony, you must actively mine for conflict. During your Level 10 Meetings™, if you sense that someone is quietly disagreeing or holding back, call them out. Ask for their real opinion and encourage them to voice their concerns.

Remind the team of the Trust pillar in Our Charter. Trust means being vulnerable and having the courage to speak the truth, even when it is uncomfortable. You must create a safe environment where healthy conflict is rewarded, not penalized.

When someone passionately disagrees with a strategy, praise them for their honesty before solving the issue. Practice being Humbly-Confident by admitting your own mistakes and inviting feedback on your decisions.

Once the team realizes that open debate leads to better solutions and that there are no political consequences for speaking up, they will abandon the polite facade. They will start using the IDS® process to solve issues permanently, rather than letting them fester in the background.
