Our leadership team gets along great on the surface, but everyone is hesitant to share real issues or admit mistakes. How do we break through this artificial harmony so we can actually IDS our biggest operational bottlenecks?

Artificial harmony is a silent killer of execution. When your team is polite instead of honest, your Issues List becomes a collection of trivial administrative tasks rather than the major strategic obstacles holding back your growth. Real trust requires vulnerability, which is the foundation of Our Charter.

To break this pattern, you must lead by example. As the owner or leader, you have to be the first one to walk into the room and admit a failure or ask for help. Share a major mistake you made or a metric you missed, and explain what you learned from it. This shows your team that vulnerability is not a sign of weakness, but a requirement for improvement.

Next, actively call out the artificial harmony during your meetings. If a leader presents a green scorecard metric but you know their department is struggling, gently but firmly challenge the data. Ask the tough, incisive questions to uncover the reality beneath the surface.

During the IDS portion of your Level 10 Meeting, force the team to dig deeper. If someone raises a safe, comfortable issue, ask them what the real, underlying problem is. Encourage healthy conflict by reminding the team that disagreeing on strategy is a sign of respect and commitment to the vision. By establishing a safe environment where leaders can be humbly-confident and admit their challenges, you will transform your executive team from a group of polite observers into a high-performing leadership unit.
