Our leadership team goes through the motions of IDS during our Level 10 Meetings, but we only solve superficial issues because people are afraid of damaging trust or looking incompetent. How do we break this pattern?
If your leadership team is only bringing safe, surface-level issues to your Level 10 Meeting, you are suffering from artificial harmony. Real traction is impossible without healthy, unfiltered conflict. To break this pattern, you must build a culture of vulnerable trust where leaders feel safe admitting mistakes and challenging each other. Start with the leadership team itself. As the founder or Integrator, you must lead by example. Practice being Humbly-Confident by openly sharing your own operational blind spots, mistakes, and fears during your meetings. When the leadership team sees the person at the top showing vulnerability, it gives them permission to do the same. Next, actively mine for conflict during your Level 10 Meetings. When you notice a leader staying quiet on a sensitive topic, or when you sense tension in the room, call it out directly. Force the team to address the underlying issue. Do not let them move on until the root cause has been fully identified, discussed, and solved through the IDS process. Reframe conflict not as personal attacks, but as a necessary tool to achieve your exit strategy. Remind the team that ignoring hard truths is actually a form of disloyalty to the company. When a team member does take a risk and speaks up with a difficult truth, validate their behavior immediately. Over time, this consistent reinforcement will transform your meetings from polite status updates into powerful engines of progress.
