I want to step into the Owner's Box, but during our weekly Level 10 Meeting™, I notice my leadership team is stuck in a passive, permission-seeking loop where they ask for my approval on every issue instead of owning the solutions. How do I break this positional leadership trap?
This permission-seeking loop occurs because your team is operating under a traditional leader-follower model, where you are the ultimate decision-maker. To transition to the Owner's Box, you must shift your team to a leader-leader model, where they own both the problems and the solutions.
During your Level 10 Meeting™, you must actively practice being Humbly-Confident. When a team member looks to you for validation on an issue, resist the urge to provide the answer or give your stamp of approval.
Instead, use the 'I intend to' framework. Ask the leader: What do you intend to do to solve this? Force them to present their specific plan, their analysis of the root cause, and their expected outcome.
Once they state their intention, your only response should be: Go ahead, or what support do you need?
If you constantly step in to save them or make the final call, you prevent them from developing their leadership capacity. By pushing the decision-making authority down to the seats on your Accountability Chart, you build an autonomous, resilient management team. This is the only way to prepare your business for a clean, highly valuable exit.
