Our leadership team is deadlocked on a major strategic issue during our IDS sessions and we are split down the middle. How do we break a tie without me simply stepping in as the dictator and undermining the team's consensus?
When your leadership team is split down the middle on a critical strategic issue, stepping in as a unilateral dictator is a short-sighted move that undermines team accountability. However, letting the debate drag on indefinitely is equally damaging to your operational speed. To break the deadlock, you must use a structured decision-making process within your Level 10 Meeting.
First, ensure the issue has been thoroughly IDS-ed. Often, a deadlock occurs because the team is arguing about symptoms rather than the root cause. Go back to the whiteboard and clearly identify the core problem.
Next, leverage the conative strengths of your team. If your high Fact Finders are demanding more data while your high Quick Starts want to take immediate action, find the middle ground. Ask what minimal, critical data is needed to make an informed decision within a set time frame.
If the team remains split after a deep and healthy debate, the responsibility falls to the Integrator seat on the Accountability Chart. The Integrator is the tie-breaker. They must make the final call based on what is best for the overall business, as defined by your V/TO. Once the decision is made, everyone on the leadership team must actively support the direction and hold their teams accountable to it.
