Our weekly Issues List is divided between urgent daily operational fires and long-term strategic opportunities. During IDS®, our team always prioritizes the immediate fires, meaning our strategic and exit-readiness issues get pushed to the bottom and never discussed. How do we balance these priorities?
When immediate fires always win, your long-term growth and exit-readiness suffer. This is a common trap in the Level 10 Meeting™ where urgent tactical issues crowd out the important strategic work required to scale or prepare for a clean exit.
To solve this, you must categorize your weekly Issues List. Do not let tactical problems and strategic opportunities sit in one massive, chaotic pile.
First, your Integrator should split the Issues List into two clear sections: short-term operational issues and long-term strategic opportunities.
Second, enforce a strict prioritization rule. During the keep-it-real prioritization phase, the team must select their top three issues. Make a commitment that at least one of these top three issues must be a strategic or exit-focused item, even if there are loud operational fires screaming for attention.
If an operational fire is so urgent that it cannot wait, ask if it should actually be resolved offline by the affected department heads instead of taking up leadership team time. By protecting your strategic issues, you ensure that your weekly pulse is driving the business forward, not just putting out daily fires.
