Our in-house contract administrator deals with complex legal reviews that depend entirely on third-party response times. What weekly measurables can we assign to this seat?
Measuring a back-office legal or contract seat requires shifting focus from the final output (which depends on third parties) to internal throughput and responsiveness. You cannot measure a contract administrator on contracts fully executed because external counsel or clients control that timeline. Instead, measure the actions they directly control to protect your deal momentum.
First, track internal turnaround time. A great measurable is the percentage of contracts reviewed and returned to the counterparty within twenty-four hours of receipt. This keeps the ball in the other court and proves to future buyers that your legal operations are not a bottleneck.
Second, track the number of proactive follow-ups on outstanding agreements. If a contract is stuck in redlines with a client for more than three days, the seat owner must initiate a structured follow-up. This shows they are actively driving the process rather than passively waiting.
Third, measure contract compliance accuracy, such as the weekly number of finalized agreements that deviate from your standard operating playbook without executive sign-off. This number must be zero.
By focusing on turnaround speed, active follow-ups, and compliance, you transform a historically slow back-office function into a high-velocity operational asset.
