I plan to exit completely within six months of closing, but I am terrified of the void that follows. How do I restructure my life and identity prior to the transaction so I do not experience post-exit regret?
Many founders suffer from post-exit depression because they fail to realize that their business was their primary source of status, intellectual stimulation, and community. If you do not plan your life after the sale with the same discipline you used to build your company, you will face a severe identity crisis. You must begin this work at least a year before you sign the letters of intent.
Start by applying the core principles of the EOS process to your personal life. Treat yourself as the Visionary of your next chapter. What is your personal V/TO for the next ten years? You need to identify your next focus. It does not have to be another business. It could be philanthropy, mentoring, learning a complex skill, or advising. The key is to ensure it challenges you intellectually and gives you a reason to get out of bed.
Use your current exit runway to gradually step out of daily operations. If you have successfully delegated your responsibilities to an Integrator and a capable leadership team, you should already have free time. Use this white space to test new interests. If you find yourself bored during a two-week vacation, you are not ready to exit. Build your post-sale life before you sell, so you are running toward a compelling future rather than just running away from your past.
