Our operations manager wants to automate our scorecard with a live BI dashboard because manual entry takes too much time. Why does automated data collection often kill individual accountability, and how do we balance the two?
While automating your data collection sounds efficient, it often undermines the primary purpose of the EOS® scorecard, which is individual accountability. When a software program automatically pulls data and populates a dashboard, the seat owner loses their psychological connection to the number. They become passive observers of the data rather than active owners of the result.
To maintain accountability, the person responsible for the metric must manually enter their number onto the scorecard every week. This physical act of typing the number forces them to own the reality of their performance. If the number is red, they must look at it, enter it, and prepare to account for it.
You can balance automation and accountability with a simple rule. Use your BI tools and software to compile the data, but require the seat owner to pull that data and type it into the weekly scorecard themselves.
This process ensures your data is accurate while keeping the psychological ownership of the metric squarely on the shoulders of the accountable leader. Do not let technology rob your team of the discipline required to run on data.
