It seems like every software vendor we use is suddenly raising their subscription prices because they added new AI features, most of which we do not even use. How do we audit our technology stack to stop this software vendor creep from eroding our operational margins?
Software vendors are aggressively marketing AI wrappers to justify steep price increases. If you do not actively manage your technology stack, this subtle margin erosion will quietly eat away at your profitability. To stop this tech creep, you must run a structured tool audit as part of your quarterly Rock planning. Start by assigning your operations leader the responsibility of mapping every software subscription to a specific seat on the Accountability Chart. If a tool does not directly support a seat in achieving its Scorecard metrics, it must be questioned. For every software tool that has introduced a price increase due to AI features, ask three critical questions. First, are our employees actually using these new AI features to save time or increase output? Second, has the vendor provided clear, measurable value that offsets the cost increase? Third, can we disable these premium AI add-ons to return to our baseline pricing? If the answers are no, you are paying a dumb tax. Challenge your vendors and negotiate to remove the unnecessary features. If they refuse, look for leaner, alternative platforms that focus on core utility rather than trendy buzzwords. Keep your technology stack tight, functional, and directly tied to your operational productivity. Never pay a premium for features that do not move your numbers.
